The winner of this year’s Sundance Audience Award is coming to theaters this fall, with a trailer that looks absolutely amazing. Crown Heights, starring Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield and directed by Matt Ruskin, is the true story of the wrongful conviction of 18-year-old Colin Warner in 1982, and the fight to get him out of prison.

It}s a fascinating story, and one that resonated particularly with festival-goers at Sundance this year, who awarded it one of the top prizes. Amazon Studios quickly snatched it up, and are partnering with IFC Films to give the movie a limited release later this fall.

Amazon Studios’ synopsis of the film is as follows:

In the spring of 1980, a teenager is gunned down in the streets of Flatbush, Brooklyn. The police pressure a child witness to identify a suspect. As a result, Colin Warner, an 18-year-old kid from nearby Crown Heights, is wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Colin’s childhood friend Carl ‘KC’ King devotes his life to fighting for Colin’s freedom. He works on appeals, takes loans for lawyer fees and becomes a legal courier to learn the court system.

Crown Heights also stars Nnamdi Asomugha, Natalie Paul, Bill Camp, Nestor Carbonell and Amari Cheatom hits select theaters on August 25.
