It’s been some time since we’ve heard from John Singleton’s long-gestating crack-cocaine drama Snowfall, and it looks like the first flurries are finally here. See how crack began in 1983 South Central with a visceral first teaser for the summer premiere.

Now eyed for an unspecified summer debut, and likely to earn a Season 2 renewal, the 10-episode Snowfall follows Damson Idris as Franklin Saint, a “street entrepreneur” raised in South Central but educated in the Valley, and “determined to raise his station in life through whatever means necessary.” Check out the teaser below:

Boyz n the Hood director Singleton wrote the pilot with executive producers Dave Andron and Eric Amadio, while the synopsis reads:

Los Angeles 1983. A storm is coming and its name is cocaine. Snowfall is a one-hour drama set against the infancy of the crack cocaine epidemic and its ultimate radical impact on the culture as we know it. The story follows numerous characters on a violent collision course, including: Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), young street entrepreneur on a quest for power; Gustavo Zapata (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), a Mexican wrestler caught up in a power struggle within a crime family; Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), a CIA operative running from a dark past who begins an off-book operation to fund the Nicaraguan Contras; and Luica Villanueva (Emily Rios), the self-possessed daughter of a Mexican crime lord.

FX will come forth with an official premiere date soon, but stay tuned for the latest on Snowfall in the meantime.
