Syfy wasn’t about to pass up “From the creator of Game of Thrones,” so an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyers is officially off the ground. The network has given a series order to the space odyssey, which may also find a surprising partner in Netflix.

Per Deadline, SyFy and Universal Cable Productions are in talks with Netflix to produce a series order for the new series based on Martin’s 1980 novella (which spawned its own 1987 film). Nightflyers would still air first-run on Syfy, but “likely involve Netflix getting international distribution and second window domestically and co-producing the series.”

Now set to be showrun by The Blacklist alum Dan Cerone, with The Magicians director Mike Cahill helming a pilot written by Jeff Buhler and produced by ‘87 film writer Robert Jaffe, so reads the Nightflyers synopsis:

Nightflyers tells the story of eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who, hoping to make contact with alien life, embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer, a ship with a small, tight-knit crew and a reclusive captain. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place, they start to question each other — and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

Martin was also previously said to have an adaptation of Wild Cards in development, but could Nightflyers prove as popular as Game of Thrones?
