Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” Hits a Billion Views on YouTube

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis continue to rack up achievements with their 2012 single "Thrift Shop," the song's video recently surpassing a billion views on YouTube. Macklemore celebrated the milestone on Instagram posting the above screenshot.

"It started with an idea, a $5,000 budget and a community of folks that lent us there stores, clothes, cars, time, energy & love," he wrote, remembering the video and a time in which he and Lewis weren't national stars. "It now has a billion plays. 1,000,000,000. Who could have ever imagined.... thank you all." In November of last year, "Thrift Shop" was officially certified diamond, selling 10 million units, and continues to do crazy numbers.

In 2014, at the the 56th Annual Grammys, "Thrift Shop" won for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis as well were nominated for Album of the Year and won Rap Album of the Year for The Heist, which features "Thrift Shop," beating Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d. city in a rather controversial decision.

The success of "Thrift Shop" and its video wasn't enough to keep the actual thrift shop where it was filmed open unfortunately as word came out in October of 2015 that the location was shutting its doors. A spokesperson for Value Village said at the time, “Though unfortunate, certain business conditions have made it necessary to close our Value Village thrift store in the Capitol Hill neighborhood after a number of years of leasing the space on a month-to-month basis.”
