Watch Aliens Conquer Earth in Neill Blomkamp’s New Short Film

You know what they say: When they won’t give you Aliens, make your own.

Neill Blomkamp seemingly missed out on making his own ambitious sequel to Alien and Aliens, but you can watch his latest film, featuring a whole new breed of ferocious extra-terrestrials, right now. It’s called “Rakka,” and it’s the first production from Oats Studios, Blomkamp’s new project dedicated to making ambitious short films. (Be forewarned: The video above is a little NSFW, with some nasty language, plus intense alien-on-man and man-on-alien violence.)

In an interview with The Verge, Blomkamp explained where the origin of “Rakka” came from:

The original idea was to make make a science fiction piece that was about an occupying force in a foreign country, and it kind of grew around that. I always wanted to do a science fiction invasion piece that had direct parallels with an occupying force in a country, like the Germans in France, or Americans in Iraq. There’s these levels of armed troops that are walking through neighborhoods, and well-built buildings, and local politicians have been turned or manipulated. There is a lot of stuff in there that I felt was really interesting, and to look at it from a different point of view is really cool. That’s where the seed was from.

This is the first of three shorts from Oats Studios; Blomkamp noted while he’d be interested in expanding the world of “Rakka,” he and his team “don’t know what form that story will take” (meaning it might be a movie, it might be a TV show, it might be something else entirely.) Personally, I was impressed by the initial results. The production values of this are miles beyond what you’d see in typical indie sci-fi shorts. (Plus: Sigourney Weaver!) Who needs Alien? Bring on more of these creepy critters.
