‘The Knick’ Season 3 Prospects Are ‘Done,’ Says Star

When last we heard, Steven Soderbergh had in mind to reboot Cinemax’s The Knick for an additional two seasons, even after an explicit end to Dr. Thackery’s story. Sadly, one series star offers a bleak update on the prospect, claiming “I’ve heard it’s done.”

You’re warned of full spoilers for the Clive Owen period medical drama from here on out, but it looks like Dr. Thackery’s death might have killed The Knick after all. Despite rumblings that director Soderbergh had entertained third and fourth seasons of the Cinemax drama outside of Knickerbocker Hospital, former ambulance driver and current This Is Us star Chris Sullivan tells TVLine that possibility has died on the table:

Yeah, I’ve heard it’s done. They were gonna try [to do a third season], but I’ve heard it’s done … I kind of love that British style: two seasons of tight, compact, good television. The more episodes you have, the thinner the episodes get. So I kind of dig that.

It was well over a year ago that The Knick writer-creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler were first pitching Cinemax a potential third and fourth season. Soderbergh himself had interest in returning, envisioning the series with a six-season run that rebooted every few years. The idea was also floated that cast members like Sullivan, Clive Owen, Andre Holland or Julilet Rylance might return in new roles, given the rebooted setting.

We’d likely have heard by now if Cinemax had any intention of following through on The Knick Season 3, but could a third year have lived up to the first two regardless?
