Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok is officially the best-reviewed Marvel movie of all time, beating Iron Man‘s 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes score by one percentage. The new movie has been hailed by critics, including our own Matt Singer, as the funniest and best of the Thor trilogy, and it’s not hard to see why.

The New Zealand filmmaker brings a breath of fresh air and comedy to Ragnarok. The MCU film is a major departure from the previous two Thor installments, both with Waititi’s added kooky sense of humor, and by breaking away from Earth-based storylines to explore other planets. With the Norse God of Thunder’s triumphant and well-received return to multiplexes this weekend, we have to ask, where exactly did the Thor movies go wrong? All fingers point to Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World.

In a new video essay above, ScreenCrush’s Ryan Arey breaks down the flaws of the second Thor outing, from the movie’s treatment of Natalie Portman’s Jane to the fake-outs of Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) death and Thor’s lost hand. Ryan explains how Thor: The Dark World could’ve been better and further the strengths of the first film.
