For the second year in a row, Bryan Fuller has left a series fans were ecstatic he’d joined in the first place. New reports indicate both Fuller and producer Michael Green have left Starz’s American Gods ahead of Season 2, owing to budget concerns.

Variety reported Fuller’s exit almost thirteen months after the beloved Hannibal and Pushing Daisies showrunner was announced to leave CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery. According to their sources, Fuller and Green were “clashing with producer FremantleMedia over budget and creative direction,” and pushing to expand the nearly $10 million-per-episode price tag for Season 2.

This isn’t the first snag American Gods has hit giving Neil Gaiman’s fan-favorite novel its proper TV due. The first season scrapped multiple episodes over storytelling concerns, and had already taken three years from announcement to premiere. A second season was not guaranteed to air in 2018, and no replacement showrunners for Green or Fuller have yet been named.

Bryan Fuller will at least keep busy with Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, but is the series (and its Fuller-rific cast) in jeopardy without its creator at the helm?
