‘Baby Driver’ Trailer: Edgar Wright’s Latest Is About to Tear This Joint Up

As the new trailer proudly proclaims (as well it should), Baby Driver is currently sitting at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which will likely push Edgar Wright’s latest to the top of many must-see summer movie lists. That rare critical consensus could change when Baby Driver hits theaters in a few weeks, but trust us on this: You’re going to want this movie in front of your eyeballs (and in your ears) as soon as humanly possible.

Early reviews from the SXSW film festival (which is where I saw it; you can read my review here) and recent press screenings have been overwhelmingly positive, but if you’re a fan of Wright’s stuff, that probably doesn’t come as a surprise. He’s only gotten better with each film — impressive for a filmmaker who got off to a strong start with Shaun of the Dead.

But the new trailer for Baby Driver isn’t just leaning on all those positive reviews. It has plenty of action, attitude and aesthetic appeal:

You know that cliche about rom-coms set in New York — “it’s almost like New York is another character”? You could easily apply that to the soundtrack in Baby Driver, which isn’t just great (it is); it’s vital to the entire film, and that’s not an understatement. Ansel Elgort’s getaway driver suffers from tinnitus (persistent ringing in the ears), so he relies on his personal playlists to stay focused:

A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

Wright’s latest is an unconventional musical inspired by classic heist films, making for a delightful and refreshing combo. Co-starring Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal and Eiza Gonzalez, Baby Driver hits theaters on June 28.
