It's hard to believe it's been almost 11 years since the legendary actor/director/comedian Harold Ramis passed away.

Time marches on indeed. One of the most beloved comedians to come from Chicago (which says a lot on its own), Ramis passed away in May 2014 following complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. Prior to his death, the disease took a lot out of him; he even lost the ability to walk in 2010. At 69-years-old, Ramis left behind a treasure trove of amazing comedies. He left such an impact that his hometown of Chicago declared February 2nd "Harold Ramis Day" in February 2024.

In a city always looking to celebrate and honor legends, Chicago is bracing for the second annual Harold Ramis Day. February 2nd is already significant this year because it's Groundhog Day, and the move to make that day an honorary one for Ramis is obviously due to the movie of the same name, which he co-wrote and directed.

On February 2nd, Harry Caray's Tavern in Navy Pier will be hosting a "Groundhog Day Celebration." When the clock flips from 2:59pm to 3pm, the festivities will begin with "I Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher playing in the establishment. Groundhog Day cast-members slated to appear at the event include:

  • Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned Ryerson)
  • Peggy Roeder (the Piano Teacher)
  • Richard Henzel (the DJ)

Tobolowsky serves as the new "President of the Chicago Groundhog Club," and will lead the crowd in the "Groundhog Day Ceremony," which will include Chicago Harry (a live groundhog) making an appearance. All eyes will be on the rodent to see whether or not he sees his shadow, therein predicting six more weeks of winter or a pleasantly early spring.

Ramis' body of work needs no introduction, but I'll give him one anyway. On the acting front, he's probably most famous for his role as Egon Spengler in the Ghostbusters franchise. Furthermore, he directed some of the best comedies of their era, including Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation, Analyze This, and Analyze That.

You can find out more about the Groundhog Day Celebration set to take place at Harry Caray's Tavern in Navy Pier on Harry Caray's official website.
