The weekend of January 28, 2017 was a tumultuous one for America, with several U.S. cities' airports scrambling to comply with an executive order from Donald Trump (that found them detaining visa-holding families at the airport for hours, before often sending them back to the country from which they came per the order) while a shooting at a Quebec City, Canada mosque left six people dead and several injured. Thousands protested in reaction to Trump's bans on Saturday and Sunday in cities including Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas, Raleigh, Seattle, Chicago and New York — and models Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid joined them in NYC.

"That's right, we are one..... Open to all religion, all races and all countries #America#LoveTrumpsHate," Gigi and Bella's mother, TV personality and former model Yolanda Hadid, wrote in an Instagram caption. Both of Gigi and Bella's parents are immigrants, and the sisters are half Palestinian (their father is real estate entrepreneur Mohamed Hadid). Gigi's boyfriend, "Pillowtalk" singer Zayn, is also half Palestinian and was raised Muslim.

The two marched with friends, and held a sign embellished with a heart that read "We are all Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, Christians, Jews," similar to a sentiment shared by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a statement vowing to help detainees affected by Trump's ban on January 29. He also announced a New York Department of State 24-hour hotline for families of those who are missing or may be detained, at (888) 769-7243.
