Asian Market to Open CR Location Near Old 1st Avenue Hy-Vee
When the First Avenue Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids closed this year, it left what many called a food desert in the metro area it once served. Residents had to travel miles just to buy food. People living in this neighborhood will soon have a new place to shop as a new Asian food market has announced it is moving in.
CBS2 reports that Hornbill Asian Market will lease a building located at 1445 First Ave. SE in Cedar Rapids, not far from the now-closed First Ave. Cedar Rapids Hy-Vee location.
CBS2 reports that the building they are moving into was built in 2019 and features over 11,000 square feet of space. Skogman Commercial Group confirmed the news this morning. A spokesperson for Hornbill Asian Market said that they are "thrilled to expand and support the Cedar Rapids community at a time when quality food options are most needed."
Hornbill Asian Market was founded in Waterloo. It has a location there and in Dubuque. CBS2 reports that they specialize in fresh produce, Asian groceries, and specialty foods.
No timetable was given for when the new market might open.
