Dubuque Will Soon Have a New Seafood Restaurant to Try
Seafood lovers in Dubuque will soon have something new to look forward to. According to a post on Facebook and confirmed by the company's website, a Laughing Crab restaurant is set to open at 1355 Associates Drive. This will take over the former Carlos O’Kelly’s location. The addition marks another step in Laughing Crab’s regional expansion, bringing its signature Cajun-inspired seafood to the heart of Iowa.
Laughing Crab is known for its vibrant menu, offering everything from classic seafood boils to fried baskets, po'boys, and savory appetizers. The restaurant focuses on bold Southern flavors and fresh ingredients, creating a hands-on dining experience that’s both fun and flavorful. Guests can expect a casual atmosphere perfect for families, seafood enthusiasts, and anyone looking to try something new.
The Laughing Crab located in West Des Moines.
The Dubuque location will join several others across the Midwest and South, including Iowa cities like Council Bluffs and West Des Moines, as well as locations in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Texas, and Louisiana. The restaurant has earned a loyal following thanks to its customizable boil options, where guests choose their seafood, seasoning, and spice level. They come served in a bag with all the fixings.
While the official opening date hasn’t been announced, signs indicate that renovations are already underway to transform the former Mexican restaurant into Laughing Crab’s latest seafood shanty.

Carlos O’Kelly’s, which had operated at that site for over 25 years, recently closed following the sale of the building. Though longtime customers may be sad to see it go, the transition brings an exciting new flavor to the Dubuque dining scene.
