I get it; I already wrote about shoveling today. Where in that case, shoveling could literally save you or your neighbors life, this time it could cost you some serious cash in Dubuque. By the way, did you know that the clock is ticking after each snowstorm? Here's what you need to know to avoid that city bill or fine.

So, after that record-setting snow dump we just had and more on the way, the City of Dubuque is reminding everyone that sidewalks need to be cleared within 48 hours after a snow event ends. Not “when you get to it,” not “after the weekend,” but 48 hours. The city ordinance is pretty clear: if the sidewalk touches your property, you’re responsible for keeping it clear, that's according to the latest news release form the city.

And they’re not talking about carving out just a narrow footpath, either. The whole width of the sidewalk needs to be shoveled from edge to edge. This is so kids walking to school, your elderly neighbor, the mail carrier, basically anyone, can get through safely. If you live on a corner, you’ve also got to clear the access ramps. Those tiny slopes can turn into mini, iced ski jumps if no one tackles them.

Now, here’s the part that might sting your wallet: if 48 hours come and go, and someone reports your snowy sidewalk, the city of Dubuque will send you a written notice. Ignore that, and they’ll send a contractor to clear it for you. By the way, YOU get to pay that bill. If you still don’t pay by the end of winter, the charge gets rolled onto your property taxes through the county. And yes, the fines can reach up to $750, plus court costs, for repeated violations. Also, don’t blow or shovel snow back into the street. That’ll get you another fine of $750, and frankly, the plow drivers have enough to move already.

If you spot a sidewalk that hasn’t been cleared, you can report it using the City’s Report2DBQ site or app. By the way, Dubuque isn't the only city with ordinances like this, make sure you check your city's code before assuming your sidewalks are fine. Bottom line? Grab the shovel, fire up the snowblower, or bribe a kid down the street with hot chocolate and a fresh quarter. Do kids still work for quarters? Either way, just get it done. Your neighbors will appreciate it, and your wallet will too.
