If you're like me, you'll be packing your tackle box, rigging your lucky lure or bait, and grabbing your buddies (or kids in my case) for Iowa's Free Fishing Weekend! Yup, it's officially underway as of today (Friday, June 6th) through this Sunday, June 8th.

This weekend is just for the Iowans, who can now fish license-free across the state’s lakes, rivers, and ponds for 3 whole days. That’s right; no license, no problem! It’s the perfect time to test the waters, introduce a friend to fishing, or just scale back and enjoy some peaceful time by the water.

My family is gearing up for a trip to Big Lake in Minnesotta at the end of the month, so this is the perfect opportunity for my kids to test out their casting, learn how to bait a hook, and learn the valuable lesson a patience that sometimes comes with the rough days of snags, bugs, and no bites (from fish). So, whether you’re a seasoned angler or still learning like my kiddos, this weekend is your golden oppor-tuna-ty (to punny?).

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) sponsors this annual event to encourage folks to dip their toes into the joys of fishing. It’s a chance to hook new hobbyists and reel in some quality time with friends and family. And, as always, be prepared for dads like me to bust out those spontaneous fish puns at any time.

Remember, just because you don’t need a license doesn’t mean it’s a fishy free-for-all. All other state fishing rules still apply. So check those size and catch limits, and be shore to leave no trace behind. Please pick up after yourselves, especially those wormless bait boxes!

I've already hit up a few ponds, lakes, and rivers with good luck this year. And with over 1,100 public waterways to choose from, Iowa offers no shortage of fin-tastic fishing spots for you, your family, and buddies. So cast your cares away this weekend and reel in the good times.
