It's that time of the year again. The temperature has dropped to a "balmy" 32-ish degrees, and the snow can stick. That means it's time to grab the cold weather gear and get ready for some downhill action. And, Dubuque has got you covered with THE best place for not only skiing and snowboarding, but great food and drinks, an awesome atmosphere, and a killer staff that helps everyone from the beginner to the experienced.

My job often affords me unique experiences, and just last year I turned back the clock, to take on the hills for the first time in 13+ years at Sundown Mountain Resort. And guess what!? This Saturday, November 30th, 2024, you can do just that as the skiing and snowboarding season begins in Dubuque, with opening weekend on their slopes!

What made skiing even better when I went, was who I was with. For the first time ever my twins, oldest daughter, and wife skied with me. It was a blast at Sundown Mountain Resort which was, and always is, particularly beautiful. The snow machines are up and running, creating the perfect atmosphere for a day on the Iowa slopes. Skiing doesn't get much more beautiful than this in Iowa.

As I have said it's the workers at Sundown that make a huge difference. In fact, that's a big part of the whole experience. Staff were on hand to get my rentals set for the family and can do the same for you this weekend. They're also full of valuable tips and tricks for beginners and returners. Speaking of which, check out the killer deals available on their Facebook post below and get ready for a killer opening weekend.

There were definitely some super-proud dad moments my last time out, as each one of my kids dealt with the difficulties of trying something new, and succeeded (with some help). I was most surprised by my mini-me, Bennett, who really grasped the concepts of skiing. I made one run with him to start the day and he never looked back.

It's really a blessing to have such an awesome ski resort so close to home. I'm was able to enjoy a day of re-learning and family fun. For me, it's always a chance to relive some of that youthful exuberance. And as always, if you see the 'Drake' out at Sundown, I'll be packing on that good ole winter beard!

As mentioned above, the staff at Sundown Mountain could not have been better to work with. Thier awesome workers can get you fitted for boots, skis, and for the first-timers; helmets (better safe than sorry right). There are also lessons available for youngsters and first-timers and an area dedicated to those working out the finer details of a downhill run. The knowledgeable staff makes the process fast and efficient.

Skiing at Sundown is always great, and there's also a good chance you'll see Owner/Operator Mark Gordon hanging around. Last time out he took a little time to help my youngest daughter Sawyer with stopping. By the end of those practice runs, and Marks guidance, she was a regular "pro."

Even better, after several hours of fun on the slopes you're going be hungry, so a stop in to Tips Up Food and Spirits is a necessity. It has a great atmosphere! They often feature live music, and that goes along great with their stellar Bloody Mary's and awesome food!

Not only does the north lodge provide a warm and comforting atmosphere, but one of THE best Reubens I've had. Not sure what made it so much better? It could have been the fact that I had just spent 2 hours on the slopes and was starving. It could also be that the cheese was gooey, the meat was delicious, and the thousand island and kraut were tangy and scrumptious. That sandwich has now become a must have every winter. The company I had wasn't half bad either. There were also cheese curds, and you can never go wrong with those, especially when you're this close to Wisconsin.

Before rolling for the day make sure to check out the gift shop too. Last time out, my wife settled on a corn-crew hoodie before we left. It's become a fun reminder of an amazing day with the family at Sundown Mountain Resort. Head out this weekend and make your own memories, and I'm sure I'll see you out there this season!
