GLAAD has officially announced the nominations for their 29th annual Media Awards, and JAY-Z is slated to receive special recognition at this year's ceremony. The world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization is praising the rapper for featuring his mother's coming out story in his "Smile" video.

The song comes straight off the Brooklyn rapper's 4:44 album, and addresses coming to terms with his mother, Gloria Carter, being a lesbian. The video shares her story in detail, appearing to take place in the 1970s during Hov's childhood in his home city of Brooklyn. Through his lyrics, Jay raps about his mother having multiple children, but later coming out as lesbian to her family and the emotions he felt while taking in the news.

The GLAAD organization's awards show honors films, television shows, movies, music and more for their "inclusive representation" of the LGBT community in their work. This year will also have a new category called Outstanding Kids & Family Programming for the first time ever.

The 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards will take place in Los Angeles on April 12, 2018, as well as in New York on May 5.

Congratulations to JAY-Z on another major honor in his career. Be sure to stay tuned for the ceremony. Check out the full list of nominations here.
