Dr. Ian Malcolm, chaos man, otherwise known as Jeff Goldblum in the real world, is reprising his role from the Jurassic Park series for an appearance in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and we got our first look at him in the first trailer that debuted last night. But don’t expect him to have any hand in the dinos vs. volcanoes action — director J.A. Bayona says his role is merely a cameo.

“He’s more like a cameo — he doesn’t have a major role in the action but it’s definitely a very meaningful one in terms of the story,” Bayona told The Independent. “He’s always somehow been the voice of the conscience in these movies, telling us where the red lines are. He plays that role in this film. For Colin [Trevorrow, screenwriter] and I, it was about finding connections with the old trilogy - that makes it very rich as we are expanding Jurassic World but also finding new connections with Jurassic Park.”

Sounds like Dr. Malcolm may only appear in that one scene from the trailer where he’s giving testimony about whether or not we have an obligation to save the dinosaurs from extinction (again). Not surprising — he did almost get eaten at least twice.

As for how Fallen Kingdom will connect to the rest of the Jurassic franchise, Bayona had some insight: “We have James Cromwell playing a character who has a relationship established with John Hammond [the character played by Richard Attenborough in Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster], and we have B.D. Wong playing Dr. Wu again. It's kind of exciting when you find your connections take the story to a whole new level. It’s an illusion of the same universe.”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hits theaters June 7, 2018.
