With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker right around the corner, fans have been buzzing over the fates of Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, and Poe Danforth as the sequel trilogy comes to an end. One of the more tender observations is how much sharp-shooting pilot Poe and conflicted rebel Storm Trooper Finn love and care for each other.

While J.J. Abrams sees the relationship between the two as more of a bromance, Oscar Isaac revealed in a recent interview with Variety that he definitely sensed a "natural chemistry" with Boyega. Indeed, he would have liked to see Poe and Finn's friendship turn into something more:

“There was an intimacy that was just there. I think the fact that neither of us shied away from that while we were shooting as well, it was just like ‘these are two guys that are happy being intimate with each other, emotionally.’ Personally, I had hoped and wished that maybe that would’ve been taken further in other films, but I don’t have control over it. It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what.”

While it's sad to know that Poe and Finn won't get together in this galaxy far, far, away, it's encouraging to know that Isaac acknowledges the special bond between Poe and Finn. Isaac mused, "If they would've been boyfriends, that would have been fun." We think so, too.

The good news is that the conversation has opened up the typically sealed lips of J.J. Abrams, who hinted at the inclusion of LGBTQ representation in Episode IX. “In the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” Abrams said.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters December 20, 2019.
