With films like The Witch and The Invitation, 2016 was a great year for horror, and the genre certainly isn’t slacking in 2017 — in addition to the all-female-directed anthology XX, this year sees the release of Raw, the French coming-of-age cannibal horror film which marks the feature directorial debut of Julia Ducournau. Already a hit on the 2016 festival circuit (where it made a few audience members ill), Raw is an early contender for this year’s best-of lists. You can see why for yourself as these new green and red-band trailers offer a little taste (sorry) of what’s in store.

Check out the green-band trailer above or the edgier, red-band version below (with extra blood and meat) — to be honest, Raw isn’t as gory as those reports of sickened audience members at festival screenings would have you believe, but that also depends on your sensitivity level. I might even argue that the exceptionally visceral scenes in Ducournau’s films are those that imply more than they actually show. In any case, Raw is a really smart and engaging horror film with a demented, darkly comedic streak; there’s a reason why it was such a hit last year, and Ducournau’s debut will undoubtedly become a 2017 horror favorite.

Here’s the official synopsis for Raw, which stars Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, and Rabah Nait Oufella:

Everyone in Justine’s family is a vet. And a vegetarian. At sixteen she’s a brilliant student starting out at veterinary school where she experiences a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her family principles and eats RAW meat for the first time. Justine will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge…

Raw will screen at Sundance later this month, but if you’re not heading to Park City, you won’t have to wait long to see what the buzz is about: Ducournau’s film hits theaters on March 10.
