Last week my wife and I joined my parents, sister, brother-in-law and two nieces for a trip to Duluth, MN. The vacation allowed me to spend more time with my nieces (Hannah is almost 2 and Hadley is 7 months).

Unfortunately, my wife and I don’t get to spend as much time with our nieces as we’d like so, naturally, there’s a warming up period with Hannah that usually lasts a few hours. Once she establishes a level of comfort with us, the hand holding, lap sitting and food offerings resume (yes, she likes to offer food to me. She’s generous and intelligent).

Hannah evidently remembers more than my eating habits; on more than one occasion, if I wasn’t in the room, Hannah was asked “Where’s Uncle Jeff?” She would respond with “Jeff poop!” Yes, my niece just assumes that whenever I’m not in the room, I’m pooping.

Kids say the darndest things.
