It seems depression is becoming a hotter topic for comedians these days, with many TV shows and movies out there to surprise us with how funny feeling miserable all the time can be. BoJack Horseman is billed as a comedy show but often it’s more of a drama, exploring all kinds of neuroses within its main characters while sidestepping completely happy endings for all of its season finales. Woody Harrelson’s Wilson seems to do much of the same, introducing us to a character who is just a complete mess and giving him an opportunity to try his best to sort his life out.

It’s also exciting to see that this is based on the work of Daniel Clowes, another of whose comics inspired the 2001 movie Ghost World, which provided a similar darkly comedic take on adolescence and depression. It’s exciting to see Clowes’ work return to the screen, and who better to bring it to life than Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern?

Here’s the synopsis:

Harrelson stars as Wilson, a lonely, neurotic and hilariously honest middle-aged misanthrope who reunites with his estranged wife and gets a shot at happiness when he learns he has a teenage daughter (Isabella Amara) he has never met.  In his uniquely outrageous and slightly twisted way, he sets out to connect with her.

Wilson opens in theaters March 24.
