It wasn’t any surprise to hear that NBC was mulling a full Will and Grace revival after the surprise election special, though star Debra Messing certainly pumped the brakes on claims the deal was done.
On paper, everything about The Incredible Jessica James sounds redundant and cliche. A young New York City transplant living in gentrified Brooklyn struggles to find success in the arts, she’s still not over a recent break-up, then meets and falls for an unlikely guy. We’ve certainly heard this story before, but its a sharp, refreshing sense of humor, and a stellar performance from actress-comedian Jessica Williams that brings Jim Strouse’s Closing Night Film to life.
There’s always a stupid reason why the couple in a romantic comedy can’t be together until the closing credits. An ex-girlfriend or boyfriend appears at the most narratively conveniently moment, or one of the leads becomes a ghost, or there’s a misunderstanding that could easily be cleared up if the characters just sat and talked to one another for literally 15 seconds. One of the best things about The Big Sick is that the obstacles (plural, there are several) facing this relationship are real and relatable and believable and hugely serious.
Love that Joker, but not in the mood to laugh? NBC’s Powerless has you covered. A clever new in-universe ad for the NBC DC comedy promotes Wayne Security’s latest anti-villain measure; one that should get you out of a jam when the Clown Prince of Crime rolls through town with his famous laughing gas.
For the most part, Arrow has managed to keep continuity in order as the flashbacks interact with present day, though word of Lexa Doig’s Talia al Ghul appearing in Oliver’s Russian past raised a few questions. Thankfully, producers promise that Talia’s appearance won’t throw too many wrenches in the works, and might just give us a Nyssa-Talia meeting one day.
News of Marvel’s ABC-IMAX The Inhumans series was quickly followed by curious distinctions that a separate movie might still make it onto the MCU slate. That’s certainly what the sometime-attached Vin Diesel would prefer, as the Guardians of the Galaxy star says he has a mind to talk to Marvel about fixing their plans.
How do you save a franchise that never really took off? Combine it with another, bigger one from (technically) the same universe, of course! While Michael Bay has, uh, transformed Transformers into a billion-dollar industry with his live-action movies, G.I. Joe hasn’t exactly done as well. Apparently, there was talk at one point of joining the two franchises together in what would have been a beautiful, violent mess.
