Before we sent Jake to school this week, my wife and I thought it would be nice to spend his last day of freedom together.  While we thought about traveling overnight to a hotel, we opted instead to take a short drive up and spend the day in Galena.

While we were there we hit a couple of fun stores.

It had been a while so we stopped into Poopsies at 402 South Main.  If you’ve never been there, it’s one of the coolest places ever!  The store is kind of hard to explain, but they feature a little of everything.  Games, cards, knick-knacks… all kinds of good stuff.  (I found squirrel underwear and bacon flavored candy canes!)  Jacob picked out a new puppet/stuffed animal that he quickly named Sam.  If you get a chance, definately stop in and check this place out.

Later we stopped by Gobbies Sports Pub and Eatery at 219 North Main for a little lunch.  While it’s been a while since I’ve been in, I’m very familiar with their fantastic pizzas and delicious beer nuggets.

We had a really nice server named Lacy.  Jake got the cheeseburger, Lisa got the Gyro and I ordered the Little Foti’s Italian Beef Sandwich.

We started with the house salad and beer nuggets.  While I would never order any dressing with the word ‘vinaigrette’ in it, Gobbies house salad with their raspberry vinaigrette was incredible.  Jacob gobbled up the beer nuggets.

Then the entrees.  Lisa and Jake both loved their food… but let me get to my sandwich!  Hands down, without a doubt, GOBBIES HAS THE BEST ITALIAN BEEF SANDWICH I’VE EVER EATEN!

Plenty of beef, cheese and au jus.  It was perfect.  The fries were really good, too.  (Later when my wife asked what I wanted for supper I told her I’d like to drive back for another.)

Now before you say something like “he probably got it free to talk about it,’ you’re absolutely wrong.  I just like to give credit where credit is due.  (The meal was reasonably priced, though.)

So the next time you’re in Galena, be sure to check out these awesome places… and if I missed something, drop me a line and let me know so I can visit next time I hit Galena.

Safe travels and bon appétit!
