Blackpink Bring Bombastic Girl Power Pop, Dua Lipa to East Coast

Blackpink were truly the revolution at Newark's mammoth-sized Prudential Center in New Jersey on Wednesday (May 1), where the K-pop foursome — Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo and Rosé — delivered an arena-worthy glitter-pop spectacle during the first of two East Coast tour stops.

Despite a high energy, highly choreographed set and considering their frantic weeks-long jaunt across North America — from Coachella to James Corden — if the ladies were out of breath at any point during their performance, they didn't let on. The same could not be said for the audience, who, by the end of the concert, were left breathless by Blackpink's onstage charm, fierce dance moves and shout-along, eardrum-busting electro-pop.

Inside the venue looked like a sea of glowing pink jellyfish as Blinks (Blackpink fans) young and old waved their heart-shaped official Blackpink light sticks in unison to songs like "As If It's Your Last," "Whistle" and "Forever Young." While their discography is still growing, the four singer-dancers padded their set with a series of solo performances to show off their individual styles and personalities.

Jennie performed her stunning pop single "Solo;" Jisoo offered a playful Korean-English cover of Zedd's "Clarity" (poised atop a disco ball throne, no less); Rosé delivered a shimmery piano-backed medley of covers ("Let It Be," "You & I" and "Only Look at Me"); and, in one of the expected highlights of the evening, Lisa confidently dazzled with a jaw-dropping dance choreo performance set to "Take Me" and "Swalla."

Together, the group particularly shined during the evening's more aggressive songs, like "Kill This Love," "DDU-DU DDU-DU" and riotous fan favorite "Boombayah," during which they leaned into their signature brand of edgy, attitude-laden girl power. But their softer side and sense of friendship was also on display during the event, with the girls often hugging each other and lovingly engaging with fans in the GA area. (As one point, Jennie quipped that there was a "baby Blink" in the audience, pointing out an adorable toddler, while Lisa later visibly lit up after being gifted a unicorn plush from a fan.)

However, the biggest surprise (and loudest audience reaction) of the night came when pop star Dua Lipa — wearing the most show-stopping lime green thigh high boots ever known to man — appeared on stage to join the girls for "Kiss and Make Up," marking their first time performing the 2018 collaboration together live. Even Blackpink were shook over the duet: "That was crazy!" Rosé gasped, as Jennie admitted they were "starstruck."

From bursts of purple confetti to fiery pyrotechnics, soft ballads to sultry dance bops, solos to surprise guests, the concert proved that when Blackpink finally comes to an area, they know how to conquer it.
