A mysterious, lingering smell has been lurking in several areas around Chicago and the western suburbs, resulting in numerous 911 calls that have left local fire authorities baffled as to its source.

Per Fox 32 Chicago, residents across various regions of Chicago have been reporting "unexplained chemical or burning electrical odor" lingering in the air for more than 12 hours this week. Local fire officials are monitoring the situation, but as of now, it's a true mystery.

A Lingering Burning Smell is Permeating Through Chicago:

The Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District revealed they have received multiple 911 calls describing the burning odor. The region in which the calls came spanned a vast stretch, from central Illinois through Indiana as far as the Wisconsin border. A quick scan of Twitter shows even folks in the western Chicagoland suburbs have been smelling something similar too.

Those same officials have stated the origin of the smoke appears to be "quite south" of Algonquin (which is about 40 miles northwest of Chicago, for clarity), but its source is unknown.

A Brief PSA Regarding Calling 911:

With that, the mystery continues. Fire officials are working with agencies and other nearby entities to determine what is causing the smell, but nothing has been concretized at this time. Those who experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, or anything relating to the smell need to seek medical attention.

It's also worth noting that this particular matter is not worthy of a 911 call, although first instinct tells you to dial the emergency number in this situation. 911 should only be utilized in the event of an immediate emergency or life-safety concern. This matter moreso warrants a call to local police or a fire officials using the respective department's business line.
