Another seismic change occurred for the New York Giants this week. The team has been in a perpetual state of flux and tumult for the entire decade, dating back to 2016, if we're being honest. However, the firing of one flailing coach paved the way for an Illinois native with additional connections to Iowa and Wisconsin to get his opportunity to improve himself.

Early Monday morning, the New York Giants fired their defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. This firing came just two weeks after the Giants dismissed their head coach Brian Daboll, who got the job back in 2022. It's been another miserable season for the G-Men; this is the third year in a row they've found themselves 2-10 and already looking to next season for any glimmer of hope.

The New Giants Defensive Coordinator Has Big Connections to the Tri-States:

To replace the newly fired Bowen, Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka promoted inside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen. 41-years-old with 12 years of NFL coaching experience, Bullen is from Palatine, IL (where the Browns Chicken Massacre occurred), and attended high school alongside former Wisconsin/NFL quarterback Scott Tolzien.

The local connections don't stop there. Bullen attended Harper College in Illinois in 2003 before jumping ship to St. Norbert College in Wisconsin, and then eventually the University of Iowa, where he earned a bachelor's in finance and a master's in sports management.

Bullen's coaching career began on the volunteer circuit when he worked with quarterbacks at Iowa City High School in 2006. The next five seasons were spent as a student/graduate assistant at Iowa under longtime head coach Kirk Ferentz. It was that experience that helped propel him into a job with the Miami Dolphins in 2012, which marked his entry into the league. Outside of spending the 2023 as a member of Bret Bielema's staff at Illinois, he's been in the NFL ever since.

Bullen was hired by the now-fired Daboll to coach the Giants' inside linebackers back in 2024. Now, he finds himself in charge of the entire defensive operation. Should he succeed, he might find himself another defensive coordinator job in the NFL.

Charlie Bullen Has a a Tough Lift in New York:

However, it won't be easy. The Giants' defense ranks near the bottom in every statistical category. Furthermore, the Giants have blown five different double-digit fourth quarter leads this season. They did so once again in their game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, which was the nail-in-the-coffin for Bowen.
