‘Get Out’ Star Daniel Kaluuya Compares His Character to J. Cole
Movie star Daniel Kaluuya is apart of one of 2017’s biggest film Get Out. He’s now comparing the character he played in the film to one of music’s top MCs—J. Cole.
In a recent interview Kaluuya did with GQ, the actor spoke on the similarities between the role he played in the movie and the real life events that took place. Along with his explanation, he threw in a comparison between Chris (his role in Get Out) and the Fayetteville rapper.
Asked about the preparation it took for him to get ready for his role, Kaluuya said, “I was working from my life experiences. I find it hard to watch a lot of the kind of things I'm doing before doing it. I don't think it's helpful for me. It makes me too aware. What I really liked about [Get Out] is that it felt real. The grounded humanity of it is refreshing for the genre. It feels like a real dude, it feels like a real relationship, it feels like a real dynamic, it feels like a real conflict. Like having to go see your girl's parents, and going "Aw, man…" Being weird about it, that feels real. So then the supernatural elements are grounded, the cinematic elements are grounded. That's what I'm aspiring to.
"He [Chris] feels like an everyman. He's kind of like J. Cole. Chris is that guy that everyone knows, who has been in everyone's class at school. That good guy from around the area.”
Cole is a populist MC, one who represents the every day man, so the comparison isn't that surprising, given songs like "Foldin Clothes" and "Wet Dreamz."
In other J.Cole news, the rapper is set to appear on tour soon as a follow up to his project 4 Your Eyez Only. He also has a feature on Joey Bada$$' forthcoming project All Amerikkkan Badass'.
Get Out is already breaking records. This past weekend, the film racked in $100 million, and it only cost director Jordan Peele $5 million to make. Peele has also become the first black writer/director to make $100 million at the box office with their film debut. Not too bad for a first timer.
