Former Iowa Hawkeye Defensive Lineman Dead at 43

A former Iowa Hawkeye football player, who stood tall on the defensive line during the successful, early years of head coach Kirk Ferentz's tenure, has died at the age of 43.

Per the University of Iowa and KCRG, Derreck Robinson passed away on Wednesday, August 13th, in San Diego, CA.

Robinson played for the Hawkeyes from 2001 to 2004. During that span, the Hawkeyes won two Big Ten Conference titles and won three of their four bowl games. Robinson contributed on a stalwart defensive line for the black and gold.

Robinson went on to sign with the San Diego Chargers, where he played in 2005 to 2006. He was also a member of the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns before calling it a career in 2011.

Robinson did go on to show love to his alma mater in 2016. He returned to Iowa City and served as an honorary captain for Iowa's Big Ten Conference matchup against Michigan. It was a game to remember. Iowa defeated Michigan 14-13.

Iowa Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz released a statement following Robinson's passing:

We are surprised and saddened to hear about Derreck’s passing. Derreck had a big, beautiful personality that inspired those around him. As a player, he persevered through ups and downs and was an important leader on our 2004 Championship team. He had a solid career in the NFL and made a great impact on those around him after football in California. We were excited to have him back as an honorary captain for our win over Michigan in 2016.
