Berkeley Breathed was born in California but once resided in Iowa City. He was the creator and curator of the long-running comic strip "Bloom County". It has, in one way or another been a staple since it began 42 years ago. Little Village Magazine says Breathed discontinued his full-time work on it in 1989 to work on other projects and dedicated more time to his family.

Fans were disappointed then but were even more excited when "Bloom County" was revived seven years ago with a near-daily posting on Facebook.

Fox Television, which is home to other irreverent animated series that have become classics, including "The Simpsons" and "Bob's Burgers" has commissioned the comic strip as an addition to their animation lineup, according to a press release from them.

As noted in the press release, "Bloom County" the series will hold true to the themes of the comic strip with modernized angles included.

Bloom County centers on a collapsed lawyer, a lobotomized cat and a penguin in briefs and fruit headwear living in the world’s last boarding house in the world’s most forgotten place deep in the dandelion wilds of FlyWayWayOver country. To wit, today’s America at a glance

Local Iowa City landmark the Lindsey House will play as big of a role in "Bloom County" the series, as it did in the comic strip.

That's not where Breathed lived during his time in Iowa City, but it is where one of the main characters, Opus the Penguin called home, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

Powerhouse Animation Studios has posted individual video re-creations of the comic strip, like the one seen below, but with the power of Fox behind it, we imagine the series being even better.

Although there is no word on when the series will begin, Opus and the whole gang are likely to be on our screens very soon.
