Former Iowa Puppy Owner Will Actually Serve Jail Time

A former southern Iowa puppy mill owner pleads guilty and is now looking at jail time.

According to KCCI, Daniel Gingerich owned a puppy mill is southern Iowa which had 120 violations in six months that included "failure to provide adequate nutrition, water and veterinary care for his dogs which resulted in unnecessary suffering and death." We told you back in November of 2021 that he was fined over $40,000 for the puppy mill conditions. Gingerich pleaded guilty to two counts of animal neglect with serious injury or death. These charges are a serious misdemeanor.

The report states that one of the charges of animal neglect is in regards to a Golden Retriever that was found emaciated. Inspectors never took her from the property, Gingerich failed to provide proper veterinary care, and she had to eventually be euthanized because of her condition. The other charge surrounds a purchase of 13 golden retrievers, five of which had medical issues. Four had respiratory issues, such as pneumonia and the fifth died. Back in November, Gingerich was barred from "selling, breeding or brokering dogs" and had to give up his 514 dogs to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and the ASPCA. Now Gingerich faces jail time, according to the plea agreement. KCCI reports that he will spend 30 days in jail with two years probation. He must also pay probation fees of $300 and report to jail "no later than April 4."

It's sad that people can treat animals this way but were happy that some justice is being served.
