As a die-hard, (nearly) lifelong Chicago Bears fan, you know right off the bat I don't go out of my way to read about nor invest much time in the Green Bay Packers. Even as a sports fan, I don't much care for writing about them.

All that being said, there is a film that revolves around the Green Bay Packers that is soon to hit theaters that appears to deserve your attention. More significantly, the film is less about the Packers and more about the backbone of the United States: family farms, coupled with the stress and uncertainty they often face.

Next month, there is a film called Green and Gold that will be coming to theaters. In Dubuque, AMC Theaters is already confirmed to be one of the multiplexes showing the film when it opens (in a very limited theatrical run) on January 31st, 2025 via Fathom Events.

Green and Gold tells the story of a Wisconsin dairy farmer named Buck (Craig T. Nelson, Poltergeist), who is saddled with mounting debt, which puts his farm at risk. He is a fourth generation farmer, and his granddaughter (Madison Lawlor) has musical aspirations that don't necessarily include the familial business. With bankers on his tail, he places a last-ditch bet on his beloved Green Bay Packers to win the Super Bowl with hopes the wager will save the only way of life he's ever known.

As someone who goes out of his way to see films of this ilk — morally good, family friendly movies that are produced and distributed by independent outlets — my first surprise was Green and Gold doesn't have a faith-based lean. These types of films are usually Christian productions, and spend far more time preaching the gospel to the choir (their core audience) than telling a compelling story.

Green and Gold is different. The film is directed by Anders Lindwall, and co-produced by his brother, Davin, lifelong Packers fans who know the trials, tribulations, and yet great rewards of farmers. The website for Green and Gold highlights their noble intentions with this production:

Inspired by our roots and our grandfather, a dairy farmer, my brother Davin Lindwall and I sought to tell an authentic story that honors rural America's farming community's grit, goodness, and unbreakable bond.

From waiting overnight in a frozen barn for a calf to be born to shutting down streets in Door County to film tractor races, every aspect of Green and Gold is a testament to the collective spirit of our friends, family, and neighbors. This is not just a film; it is a project built from the love and traditions of where we come from. Each frame captures the countless contributions of people who believed in this story, whether lending their time, opening their homes, or offering invaluable advice and resources. The journey from script to screen has been deeply personal, filled with moments that tested our resolve and reinforced why this story needed to be told. - per Green and Gold's website

If you check out the film's trailer, you'll note some true Wisconsin hallmarks that can't be faked. For one, there's a Culver's burger box on the dash of Madison Lawlor's car (yes, Culver's is one of the big sponsors of the film, but there's authenticity embedded in the details). There's also a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo from comedian Charlie Berens, who bleeds Wisconsin pride (and has performed in Dubuque a couple times).

Even the Bears fan in me can admit there seems to be a lot of good in this Packers-laden production.
