Now that school is back in session and football season is starting, it won't be long before the leaves start changing and the first snowfall happens.

Winter doesn't need to be dreary. It's a great time to enjoy popular seasonal outdoor activities: snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, skating, cross-country or downhill skiing, and snowboarding.

I don't necessarily look forward to brutally cold weather. Still, there's something to be said for the white stuff dusting the landscape, especially regarding the fluffy stuff known as fresh powder on our local midwestern ski hills.

I started snowboarding many years ago, and it's my go-to wintertime sport. I'm not looking to break any speed records or bones, so it's mainly fun to get some fun runs in when the weather and snow cooperate.

Sundown Mountain in Dubuque is one of my top choices, and now is the time to take advantage of their pre-season pass specials.

With 21 runs groomed daily, two terrain parks, four chair lifts, and a fully-lit mountain, it provides a great snowboarding and skiing option during the day and when the sun goes down. In addition, it's family-friendly, has plenty of parking, and is accessible with top-notch snowmaking equipment.

The North & South Lodges, The Barn, and Ben's Den are well-stocked with cold brews and hot food, coffee, and cocoa, so there's plenty to choose from when food or a warm-up break is required.

If you're new to the sport, I recommend a lesson or two to get up to speed on staying safe and having fun on the slopes. Sundown offers terrific lesson options to get you ready to tackle the terrain.
