You know what they say, "If you gotta' go out, do it with a BANG," and boy did they! With a thunderous series of controlled explosions, the iconic Black Hawk Bridge over the Mississippi River was demolished in Lansing, Iowa, bringing a dramatic close to nearly a century of service. The bridge connected Lansing, Iowa, to Wisconsin since 1931, and stood as a vital transportation link and testament to good 'ole river-town heritage.

The 94-year-old riveted cantilever bridge was known for its distinctive steel trusses and narrow roadway. While beloved by locals, it had become increasingly difficult to navigate, especially when large trucks met in the middle. Before its closure in October, the bridge carried an estimated 2,100 vehicles per day and was the only Mississippi River crossing for roughly 30 miles in either direction.

Friday’s demolition began with the implosion of the main span, sending the massive steel structure into the river below. Warning horns sounded for nearby watchers before the blast to alert nearby residents. And boy was it a blast! A smaller implosion of the east end of the bridge is planned for later, while the western portion will be dismantled piece by piece due to its proximity to homes and railroad tracks.

Officials discouraged in-person viewing because of safety concerns and the possibility of large crowds. Instead several  live video stream were available for the public, the KCCI feed (shared here and in screen-grabs) was exceptional. Some residents did watch from afar, marking the moment as both bittersweet and historic. Some materials from the bridge are being salvaged for keepsakes and for a future tribute in Lansing.

Demolition of the old bridge is estimated to cost $20 million, part of a larger $140 million project to replace the aging structure. A ferry service is currently operating to carry vehicles across the Mississippi while construction continues.

The new bridge is designed to be wider, safer, and more efficient for modern traffic. It is expected to open in 2027 ensuring Lansing remains connected while honoring the legacy of the bridge that served it for generations.
