Study: Iowans Affording Life By Canceling Netflix, Selling Stuff

Hey so by the way, life is expensive lately.

If you haven't noticed, we're at the point where riding horses to work is actually a great idea to save on gas. The prices of groceries, necessities, and the average cost of living is skyrocketing.

There are always places you can cut spending and a new study has found Iowa's favorite ways to do just that.

Iowa's Top Ways To Save

The top 2 ways to save (that each came in at 41%) were:

1. Canceling subscriptions like Netflix and Spotify
2. Selling personal possessions (what's up Facebook Marketplace)

Subscriptions keep upping their prices. This spring, Netflix, Spotify, and Paramount Plus raised their basic tier by a dollar each month. This fall, Hulu raised it's prices about $1.50 per month, Disney+ went up by $0.50 per month, and Peacock upped it's price by a dollar each month.

If you're still in your ex's friend's sister's account, you may not be much longer.

When it comes to selling those clothes you swore you'd fit into one day, Facebook Marketplace is always an interesting route to go. Vinted has also ramped up in popularity.

Here are the rest of Iowa's approaches to saving money:

• Cutting back on groceries (36%)
• Using savings to cover everyday expenses (32%)
• Skipped social plans with friends (27%) yeah, sure it was for the money
• Missed or delayed paying a bill (27%)
• Avoided attending events (18%) also sureee it was for the money
• Taken a second job or a side hustle (18%)
• Delayed medical or dental care (14%)
• Reduced retirement contributions (14%)

So really, it's not bad to be antisocial. It's fiscally responsible.

Everyone's Really Worried About Paying Bills

I know, that's so surprising. The study also found that 32% of Iowans have borrowed money to cover their essential living costs (rent, bills, groceries, gas). Of that 32%, 71% of them asked their families for help.

59% of those involved in the study said that utility bills are in their top 3 financial concerns for the next year. Same bro.
