That’s Some ********: Study Finds Iowa Swears More Than Any Other State
Every state has their claim to fame right?
Iowa's known for corn, hogs, the Field of Dreams, and apparently, potty mouths.
A study by PlayFame found that Iowans use swear words the most...at least online. Within 202,000 comments containing profanity from Iowans on across Reddit posts, the average was found to be over 12 swear words per 100 comments.
Iowa's score was 9.39/10, putting the Hawkeye State at number 1 for swearing the most.
And it looks like Iowa is swearing just for kicks and giggles. That's because Iowa didn't have a high negative 'sentiment' score. Illinois is the only state in the top 10 that had a negative average sentiment score, meaning that most of the comments that did use profanity were also in a salty tone.
South Dakota ranked right behind Iowa, averaging in at 9.37/10.

The study is a part of broader research on online language in America and how everyone is fine with using four-letter words. Data does show that Americans swear online more than any other country. Offline and in general about 25-39% of Americans say they swear every day. So look at us, we're in the top of the top.
Some reactions to the study are surprised that the highest-ranking states aren't New York or California, or somewhere very heavily populated. But those of us in the Midwest are absolutely not surprised. It's part of our culture. We may be Iowa Nice, but there's nothing wrong with a few "sentence enhancers".
