Illinois City Named Murder Capital of America for 11th Consecutive Year

In terrible news, a city in Illinois was named the murder capital of America for the 11th straight year.

Not a distinction any city wants but unfortunately, one is recognized as such.

When you think about the sheer population size of some of America's biggest cities you would have to believe it would be New York #1 and then Los Angeles #2 when it comes to murder.

Believe it or not, New York City isn't #1 or #2. Actually, NYC ranked third overall and Los Angeles was 5th.

New York City has had 438 homicides which is a big number but considering the 8 million people who live in the area it has one of the lowest murder rates in America.

Houston had the 4th highest number of homicides in 2022 while Philadelphia had the 2nd most.

However, there was one city that had so many murders in 2022, it had 181 more than Philadelphia, and I'm talking about Chicago.

According to Wire Points, Chicago had 697 homicides and they "were the most in the nation for the 11th-straight year...Chicago’s homicide rate climbed to 25.8 per 100,000 in 2022 from 18.6 in 2019, a 39 percent increase."

Per capita, Chicago ranked 13th overall with New Orleans having had 74.3 homicides per 100K people in 2022.

While the numbers for Chicago were dismal in 2022, it looks like there has been some very minimal progress as homicide numbers have dipped in 2023.

As of today, November 14, homicides in Chicago are at 523 according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
