Last month, Judy Faulhaber of Big Apple Bagels stopped by the studio to announce that the shop will be holding their annual "Stocktober Fest" event in collaboration with St. Stephens Food Bank. At last, the week is here, with the event set to take place October 13th - 15th!

Big Apple Bagels, located at 1675 John F. Kennedy Road in Dubuque, will collect non-perishable food items at their shop with the goal to fill up a truck full of food for people in need just in time for the winter season. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

Resources Unite will also be assisting with the event. With that, Resources Unite President Josh Jasper was kind enough to get behind the microphone and talk about the organization's mission and their involvement with Stocktober Fest!

Resources Unite strengthens the Dubuque community by helping connect people to volunteer opportunities and resources that lead to a happier and more engaged way of life, per their website. That includes providing food to those in need. Jasper explained his connection with St. Stephen's Food Bank and how it serves their local food pantry:

Part of the reason we're involved [with Stocktober Fest] is because we have a food pantry. So, when you think about the process in which someone gets food, it starts with the food bank. [St. Stephen's] is the organization I can purchase food from for like a tenth of a dollar, and then people that need food come to our office...

It's because of that system that Josh has the power to fill up his minivan full of food for as little as $25. The food will then be stocked at Resource Unite's food pantry for Dubuque and Tri-States-area residents who need it.

Although Big Apple Bagels is taking non-perishable food items as donations, Jasper outlined other types of food that are great to donate, as well as noted something important to keep in mind when making your donation:

We would encourage people to think outside the box. We can take perishable goods, frozen goods. Think about this: you want to be able to feed someone's stomach, fill them up, and maybe create a leftover [....] We try to give spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, a pound of hamburger [....] I would shy away from any expired foods. You always want to think about what message that may send to the person receiving an expired food item. But outside of that, anything is game.

I couldn't be more excited to be a part of Stocktober Fest at Big Apple Bagels. Tune into Y105 this Thursday and Friday morning from 7-9am to hear my broadcast, or better yet, stop out, get some delicious coffee and bagels, and make a food or monetary donation to St. Stephen's Food Bank!

Resources Unite is located at 1900 JFK Road in Dubuque.
