Kodak Black Won’t Be Out of Jail for at Least Another Week
At the end of February, 19-year-old Kodak Black was arrested during a court hearing in Fort Lauderdale for allegedly violating the terms of his house arrest while he was in the middle of a comeback tour.
At the time of Kodak's arrest, his attorneys Gary Kollin and Allan Stephen Zamren insisted the young rapper would be out soon, but in court this past Friday, a judge set a continuation hearing for March 20 to decide whether Kodak is a "danger" to Broward County Residents. That means Kodak won't be getting out of jail for at least another week.
Kodak's probation stems from multiple charges. In October 2015 he was arrested and accused of forcing people into a car after he suspecting someone of breaking into his home. He was released on bond but arrested again in April 2016 for a suspected drug deal in Hallendale Beach.
Last August, Kodak, born Dieuson Octave, plead no contest to charges including robbery, false imprisonment, fleeing a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a delinquent. Facing a maximum of 55 years in prison, he was instead sentenced to one year of house arrest and five years of probation.
The terms of that plea deal let Kodak leave his house for work purposes only, allowing him to embark on his Back and Better tour across the U.S.
According to the warrant for his arrest, Kodak's alleged visits to a strip club in Miami and a boxing match in Cincinnati were not approved beforehand. His lawyers argued that both appearances were promotional in nature and therefore work-related. But Kodak's probation officer Sandy Friedman said regardless of whether the rapper was actually working at those appearances, he didn't get approval for them.
Kodak also apparently failed to complete mandated anger management courses, and in court on Friday, Friedman played videos of Kodak allegedly cursing about the classes and coming to one late. You can see one of those videos below.
The Florida rapper's latest single "Tunnel Vision" just hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 today. His debut album Painting Pictures is supposed to be released March 31.
