Lea Michele Announces Return to Music With Sophomore Album, ‘New Years Surprise’
In a tweeted message captioned "2017," the former Glee star wrote, "2017 is off to an amazing start! Excited to announce my new album will be released soon!"
And for those yearning to see Michele return to live performances (the singer-actress got her start on Broadway at age 8), she had "Another New Years surprise...There will be limited live shows coming sooner than you think! Stay tuned!"
Michele's 2017 album will be her second solo release since 2014's Louder. Despite relative commercial success — Louder debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart though sales fell soon after — reviews were mixed to negative, with Rolling Stone writing "it will make a decent audition tape for Julie Taymor’s inevitable production of Teenage Dream: The Katy Perry Musical in a few more years" in their 1.5 star review.
But Michele is aware of her debut album's shortcomings, so expect a different direction on her upcoming release. She told Marie Claire in 2015 that she, too, was frustrated by the results of her work on Louder, blaming differing visions between the album's producers and herself.
"The problem with the first record was that I would record a song, and then I would get it back from production and it would sound very different," Lea told the magazine. "As an artist, that can be jarring. That’s why I’m more hands-on on this."
Learning from her lack of creative influence on Louder, she continued, "This is about experience, about confidence. I’m sure it’s like—kids? The first time around, you’re just kind of winging it. You’re like, ‘I hope I don’t f– up this kid.’ The second time around, you’re not as intimidated, so you know how to handle each thing…I have a clearer vision."
