Mariah Carey Lands New Drama Series Based on Her Life Story
A television show based on Mariah Carey's rise to fame is getting a drama series treatment. According to Deadline, Starz cable network is developing a fictional scripted drama series based on Carey's real life experiences with Carey as one of the executive producers.
The drama series will be set in 1986 New York City and "chronicles the rise of an ambitious bi-racial 16-year-old girl, an aspiring singer-songwriter who survived a difficult childhood to become the biggest selling female music artist of all time." While this screams Glitter all over again, with Nina Coleman as the writer the show will most likely not be a repeat of the 2001 film. Coleman's credits include the family comedy Date My Dad.
Colman will also serve as a showrunner and one of the executive producers on the show alongside Carey and Golden Globe nominee Stella Bulochnikov. Carey is no stranger to film, having starred in Glitter, WiseGirls, Precious, The Butler, and many other movies. Carey's insight and personal stories may be exactly what the show needs to have a strong debut.
Carey also recently announced that she is partnering with Epic Records to launch her own label, Butterfly MC Records. The first album on the new label will be from Carey herself. This will be her first album since, Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, which dropped in 2014.
