The Shrek Cinematic Universe lives!

[blasts Smash Mouth at full volume forever]

It’s been 11 years since the last movie set in the world of Shrek, which wasn’t actually a Shrek movie but a spinoff called Puss In BootsSince then, the world has waited, and wondered “Have we seen the last of Shrek? What happened to Donkey? Oh wait, Farquaad, that’s a pun, huh?”

At last, all those years later, a new film is here — but, sadly, it is not a new Shrek. Instead, Puss in Boots returns in a sequel, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which will once again star Antonio Banderas as the voice of the title character. Also returning for the sequel is Salma Hayek as the voice of Kitty Softpaws.

The first image from the movie is above; here is the film’s official synopsis:

Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious PiB as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws (Oscar® nominee Salma Hayek). In their quest, Puss and Kitty will be aided—against their better judgment—by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén, What We Do in the Shadows). Together, our trio of heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Oscar® nominee Florence Pugh, Black Widow) and the Three Bears Crime Family, “Big” Jack Horner (Emmy winner John Mulaney, Big Mouth) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura, Narcos).

So it’s not another Shrek. But maybe if we all pester DreamWorks on social media they’ll throw in a post-credits scene where Shrek shows up at Puss in Boots’ house and tells him he’s there to talk him about the All Star Initiative. (Please remember to use the hashtag #RestoreTheShrekverse in these tweets.)

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will premiere in theaters on September 23.
