One of the most fun aspects of being on a college campus is the spontaneity that comes with being around young people your age. One minute, you're walking to class, the next, you're catching a football in the quad. Maybe you find some friends and join them for a chat.

Or, if you're at the University of Iowa, you seize the opportunity to bask in the first significant snowfall of the season by organizing a large snowball fight on the Pentacrest lawn.

That's exactly what a plethora of students did last week during the all-day snowstorm on Wednesday. As nightfall, dozens of students gathered on the Pentacrest lawn to snowboard, sled, commiserate, and pelt each other with snow as it blanketed the campus.

The University of Iowa captured it on social media in videos that have since gone somewhat viral on YouTube, X, Facebook, and TikTok. The video is scored to music and shows kids having fun. One student gets a sled's worth of snow dumped on her. Another cleans the snow off her glasses. Another shows off his snowboarding skills on a snow-covered curb.

Even if the snow was on the fluffy side, which doesn't usually suit snowballs quite like packing snow, that didn't stop students from trying their hardest to whack their classmates with snow. You can see the snowballs practically disintegrate as they fly through the air, turning into a puff of snow.

And yet, that's part of the fun. It's a testament to the kind of impromptu energy that exists on a college campus. I couldn't find confirmation of how this massive gathering came, but like most things on a campus, it was probably not planned with great dedication, which only makes it cooler.
