My thanks to Laura Keehner from Hills & Dales for stopping in to chat this morning about their Autism Safety Fair this Saturday (4/11).

April is Autism Awareness Month.

Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development.  According to autismspeaks.org, autism is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the United States that affects 1-in-68 children.

This Saturday (4/11) from 9:30 to 11:30am, you can stop by the Hills & Dales Community Center at 3505 Stoneman Road in Dubuque for their Autism Safety Fair.

It's open to parents, family members, schools, teachers, educators and first responders.

You can learn more at the local provider informational booths, including child health specialists, folks from the Dubuque Community School District, Emergency Services/SMART 911, Hills & Dales, Keystone AEA, Lutheran Services in Iowa, Medical Associates Psychiatric Department, Mercy Service Club Autism Center, Unified Therapy Services and Unity Point Health/Finley Hospital.

There will also be an emergency service panel from 10am to 10:45am with an opportunity to hear from local fire, police and EMS professionals regarding safety measures and a chance to ask specific questions.

Be sure to wear blue and join the human puzzle piece photo at 9:45am!  (Blue is the official color for autism awareness!)

You can also check out a supervised sensory area for kids, free safety decals and door prizes!

For more information, call Hills & Dales at 563-556-7878, or visit the HILLS & DALES WEBSITE.
