A Cascade, IA native who has coached basketball across multiple schools, including Northern Iowa and Iowa State, is calling it a career after a memorable run.

This week, amidst the madness of March Madness, Creighton men's basketball coach Greg McDermott announced his retirement. At 61-years-old, McDermott's career is worthy of celebrating. He spent 16 years at Creighton, winning 365 games as the steward of the basketball program. Cumulatively, he has a career record of 514-319 over 25 Division I seasons, including the 2023 Elite Eight and 13 overall NCAA tournament bids with UNI, Iowa State, and Creighton.

Greg McDermott's Retirement Statement:

It's hard to put that kind of career into words, but Greg McDermott found the right ones when saying goodbye to Creighton:

It has been an incredible honor to lead the Creighton men's basketball program for the past 16 years. I'm very proud of the young men that have proudly worn the Bluejay uniform and represented our program in a first-class manner. Witnessing their growth and development on and off the playing floor was especially gratifying - Greg McDermott, per ESPN

Greg McDermott's Successor:

Alan Huss will be taking over as head coach of the Creighton men's basketball team. An alum of the school and Decatur, IL native, Huss joined McDermott's staff as an associate head coach this season after he stepped down as the coach of High Point in April 2025. Huss joined the staff as the "coach in waiting" to succeed McDermott when he decided to retire. That time is now.

McDermott will be remembered as someone who helped guide Creighton through their transition from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East. In 11 of 13 seasons in the Big East, the basketball team was .500 or above. However, this season was a struggle, as the Bluejays finished 15-17, which ended a run of 10 consecutive 20-win seasons.
