A massive grocery chain, who has more than 1,200 locations across the United States, has announced a large swath of layoffs, an upwards of 1,000, according to multiple sources.

First reported by Bloomberg last week, Kroger, who has a large presence in Illinois and Wisconsin, will be laying off nearly 1,000 employees. Most of these cutbacks are corporate associates as opposed to in-store workers or those working in their manufacturing and/or distribution centers.

The move by Kroger was said to be related to the company's internal restructuring, as noted by Kroger Interim CEO Ron Sargent:

In the past few months, we have all looked for ways to simplify the organization, shift resources closer to our customers, and focus on work that creates the most value - Kroger Interim CEO Ron Sargent, per AOL.com

Roughly 200 individuals who were laid off work for Kroger in the downtown Cincinnati area.

While there are no Kroger locations in Iowa, there are over 30 in Illinois. In Wisconsin, Kroger operates under local names such as "Pick 'n Save" and "Metro Market."

This is the second time this year that Kroger has laid off a large number of corporate employees, the first time being back in February when over 200 lost their jobs. The Cincinnati-based grocery chain employs more than 409,000 people across 16 states, per AOL.com.

Furthermore, Kroger announced they would close 60 stores over the next 18 months while investing somewhere between $3.6 and $3.8 billion in capital expenditures that would set the stage for new stores and renovations of existing properties.
