Iowa Women’s Basketball Players to Throw First Pitch at the Field of Dreams
An upcoming summer event series at the Field of Dreams movie site just got more star-power with three members of the University of Iowa Women's Basketball team set to make an appearance!
Two weeks ago, it was announced that Ben Zobrist would be making a special appearance at the Field of Dreams movie site for the Ghost Players event at the Field of Dreams movie site on August 3rd, 2024. The retired ballplayer will be available for autographs and photos from 10-11:30am ahead of his performance.
Now, it's been revealed that Sydney Affolter, Taylor McCabe, and Hannah Stuelke of the Iowa Hawkeye Women's Basketball team will be at the Field of Dreams movie site for their own Ghost Player event on July 20th, 2024! The Ghost Player event is set to kick off at 1pm, and Affolter, McCabe, and Stuelke will be available for free autographs from 10-11:30am before throwing out the first pitch to start the show.
Visitors are allowed one item per player for signatures, per press release.
The Ghost Player performance is billed as the "Greatest Show on Dirt," and involves family-friendly entertainment centered around hijinks on the baseball diamond. The show is free and runs for an hour.
Affolter, McCabe, and Stuelke were essential contributors to the Hawkeyes back-to-back national championship campaigns. Stuelke, who is from Cedar Rapids, earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors last season and was the 2022-23 Sixth Player of the Year in the respective too. Affolter was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team this past season, and McCabe saw her role increase as a sophomore, which led to her being a notable threat from the 3-point line.
World Series MVP Ben Zobrist was already on the calendar to appear at the Field of Dreams' Ghost Player event on August 3rd. Now, Dyersville is seeing more sports star-power for a show just a couple weeks before that!
Zobrist is a three-time MLB All-Star, who also won the World Series with the Kansas City Royals the year before in 2015. A second baseman and outfielder, Zobrist played most of his career with the Tampa Bay Rays. He retired a Cub following the 2019 season.
The best part about the "Ghost Players" event? All shows are free to attend! Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged. Concessions will be available for purchase.
It's a big year for the Field of Dreams movie site, as it's celebrating its 35th anniversary. In the present, the site features tours of the famous house, and hosts baseball tournaments and overnight stays in the home as well.
However, the MLB's new, annual Field of Dreams game will be held at Rickwood Field in Alabama this year due to the movie site undergoing extensive upgrades and renovations. Rickwood Field was where Willie Mays played for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. It is the oldest ballpark in America.
Find out more about the upcoming "Ghost Players" events that will take place at the Field of Dreams on the site's official website.
