Absurd Illinois: Extra Taxes For Campfires, Back Yard Firepits, and Grocery Bags
Get ready, Illinois, because if it is completely up to some of your politicians, you'll be swimming in even more taxes than you already deal with. That statement has now been proven true by the latest Democrat-backed bills in the State House of Representatives. Have you checked out HB4459 and HB5112 yet? If not, buckle up because they're looking to steal more of your money.

Let's look at HB4459 first. This bill will make you get a permit and pay up to five dollars every time you light your backyard fire pit. Want to roast marshmallows with the kids, or enjoy a simple family campfire at a park? Too bad, the local government wants its cut. Don’t even think about skipping the permit if this passes; violating it could cost you $100,000 to $500,000.
Remember, that's just for a campfire or your backyard pit! Supporters claim it’s about “fire protection.” Let’s be honest, can a $5 permit keep anyone from burning down your neighborhood or park? My reasoning? My wife's got a blow dryer at home with a warning tag that says, "Don't use in the shower." Where the heck did common sense go?
Next on our agenda is HB5112, known as the "Carryout Bag Reduction Act." On the surface, it seems like a good idea, but starting in 2027, you’d pay 10 cents a bag, rising to 25 cents or more if the government doesn’t hit certain "environmental targets," whatever that means. It's like our groceries didn't cost enough already. On top of that, plastic bags would be banned entirely for delivery options. Come to think of it, every time I leave the store after grocery shopping, I have at least 10 plastic bags full.
Folks, I’m all for keeping Illinois clean, but punishing everyday shoppers like this? Outrageous, no matter what angle you come at it from. I get it, it's not a whole lot of cash, but over a year, we're talking another hundred-plus dollars out of your paycheck.
Illinois already pays some of the highest taxes in the nation, yet politicians like this want to nickel-and-dime residents for their backyard fun and our groceries. Let's be real, this is NOT about safety or the environment; it’s about squeezing every last dime from hardworking families in the state.
Illinois does NOT have a revenue problem, they bring in plenty. No, what they have is a serious spending problem. It's time to balance those books asap, or even more people will leave their state: it's that simple. So the next time you fire up your pit or grab groceries, just remember: in Illinois, even fun and food can be bundled with taxes.
