Starting July 1 You Must Upload Your ID Before You Can Watch Adult Content In Iowa
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a new law that will require adult websites to scan ID's and confirm a user’s age before letting them access content.
The law, House File 864, is aimed at keeping minors from viewing pornographic material online. It was signed earlier this week as part of a group of bills approved by the governor.
What Will Change for Users?
If a website is covered under this law, users will have to prove they are 18 or older before they can enter.
Websites may use different methods to do this, such as:
- Uploading an ID
- Using a third-party age-check service
- Other approved verification systems
The law mainly targets websites and apps where a large portion of the content is considered pornographic material.

When Does It Start?
The law is set to take effect on July 1, 2026. After that date, websites will be expected to follow the new rules or face penalties.
Noncompliant companies face daily civil penalties of up to $10,000, with each instance of a minor’s unauthorized access treated as a separate violation.
Iowa joins 25 states that require age verification for adult content in an effort to restrict minors from accessing explicit material online.
Why Was This Law Passed?
Supporters say the goal is to protect children from being exposed to explicit content online.
They argue that it is easier than ever for minors to access adult material, and they want stronger safeguards in place.
Concerns About Privacy
Not everyone agrees with the law. Some critics worry about privacy and security.
They say requiring ID checks could put personal information at risk if websites do not properly protect user data.
Others argue that it could make adults uncomfortable accessing legal content online.
Iowa is now one of several states moving toward stricter online age verification rules.
Starting this summer, adult websites operating in Iowa will need to add age checks before users can enter.
