What Are the Most Remote Places in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin?

If you're looking to get away from it all, you can't do better than the most remote places in all of Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

The upper Midwest is full of some great urban areas and cities like Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Milwaukee, and Des Moines. But our neck of the woods is also home to some pretty out-there places, too. If you head up north in either Wisconsin or Minnesota or get off I-35 in Iowa, you'll find some places that are in the middle of nowhere... literally!

And thanks to the crew over at 24/7 Wall Street, we now know where THE most remote places in all of Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin are located. Each of these places was selected based on their proximity to a major city-- and there's a pretty good chance you've never been to any of them. Take a look:

The Most Remote Place in Minnesota: Coleman Island

This remote place is located way up north, on the Canadian border, in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. If you want to visit, you'll have to drive around three hours and forty-five minutes by car from the Twin Cities and then hop in a canoe and paddle for a few hours to get there.

The Most Remote Place in Iowa: 3 Miles West of Titonka

To find the Hawkeye State's most remote place, you'll need to head southwest of the Twin Cities. In fact, 24/7 Wall Street says it's located three miles west of Titonka in the north-central Iowa county of Kossuth. It's about a two-hour and 42-minute drive to the nearest big city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, though there are several small towns in this area, including Emmetsburg, Forest City, and Blue Earth, Minnesota. 

The Most Remote Place in Wisconsin: Outer Island, Lake Superior

The most remote place in all of America's Dairyland is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior. While it's located about 24 miles from Bayfield, Wisconsin, it's a challenge to get there. According to the National Park Service (NPS), "Only the most experienced private boaters and sea kayakers should consider attempting a trip to Outer Island due to the great distance and exposed location." And landing at the Outer Island Lighthouse is often a no-go: "Even when lake conditions permit approach, the exposed location of the dock often makes landing impossible," the NPS says.
